Departing from our research of furniture as adaptable objects and the notion of a breathing home, we
sharpen our focus with this installation on a dialog between the indoor and outdoor environment of the
Neue Nationalgalerie. Entitled «On Two Chairs», the confrontation of the design of two chairs unveils an
adaptation process that this furniture pieces have to perform in order to assure comfort to it ́s users.
In the interior of the glass hall the Barcelona Chair stands as one of the protagonists of this situation full of contrasts. As an untouchable and everlasting figure, this heavy and elegant lounge chair rests within the well-tempered indoor climate of the glass hall. Without the need of having to assist the users of the museum with any special feature, as all the needs of the actors of the museum are already covered by the technical equpiment hidden in the mayority in the underground level, this chair allows itself to merely exist protected by a glass hall and it ́s preservation order. Eventhoug the transparency of the building creates an impression of permeability, this objects is isolated from it ́s exterior by regulating the air that covers it.
On the other side of the facade the visitor of the exhibition is exposed to an challenging outdoor climate and leaves the jurisdiction of the building having to confront situations of friction, such as a summer heat wave. The design of the Monobloc chair equiped with Plug-in alike devices found here questions the search for comfort outdoors and manifests the huge effort that has to be done in order to mediate with the exterior climate. With the aim of covering one of the essential needs of the user of the chair a device alike assemblage is proposed that tries cool down a stream of air, allowing the user to contemplate the rest of the exhibition from the inmediate exterior space. Aiming not to exceed the weight of the bare Barcelona Chair this furniture piece stands as en bricolage excercise, that is composed with humble tools and plain ressources and can be only activated by the effort of it ́s users. Between others, the role of humans, often replaced by machines, are questioned within the operation of a building? Also the question of accesibility of a condition of hyper comfort arises here.
